[Tea room] is a space that can be prepared for the sublimation of the spirit of the lord of the tea ceremony. A very luxurious tea house that is built for the act of drinking tea has not been used only for tasting tea, but is a guest that is served by a teacup of the tea room. It is also said to be a “Japanese-specific beauty festival” that served as a place to show off its own sense of beauty and communicate.
In addition, the invited customers themselves purify their bodies by drinking and drinking the medicinal and aesthetic sensations in the “tea”. I think [teahouse space sense] has the effect of encouraging people in such a situation. And the microcosm has all the mental functions necessary to “taste tea”. The beauty consciousness born by the tea room where all three are “tools, people, and space” has the source of “beauty in everyday life”.

The site-specific exhibition in the historical Rinko-kaku Tea House is the second phase of the collaboration between Concept Space, Japan and Parallel Art Foundation, Hungary.
In 2019, Rómer Flóris Museum of Art and History in Győr, Hungary hosted the exhibition Fine Matters in its renaissance building, introducing Atsuo Hukuda from Japan, Linda Carrara from Italy and Viktória Körösi from Hungary. Invited artists joined the 51st Artist Residency program of the museum as well.
This time, Rinko-kaku Tea House in Maebashi challenges the artists to get in dialogue with a space full of symbols, references and rich history. A house within a 130-year-old building complex, built by the first governor of Gunma, Motohiko Katori (1829-1912) hosts mostly new artworks and installations created for this special occasion.
The five participating artists, Linda Carrara (IT), Árpád Forgó (HU), Shuhei Fukuda (JP), Viktória Körösi (HU/AT) and Yuka Miyazaki (JP), explore contemporary interpretations of traditional techniques with a minimalist and delicate approach. Their focus is on the investigation of materials, the contradiction of their real/known and perceived features that appear in the works represented by structures, forms and the balance between dimensions. Floating silver foliage, marble wood blocks, shaped canvas objects and the crazed paintings installed in this unique space motivate the viewer to discover the works from different angles, to move in the space, but at the same time to hold and meditate.

#JapanRevisited202x: then-now-after has been conceived by the Austrian Cultural Forum Tokyo as a platform for artists from Austria to reimagine and revisit their memories, interpretations, and dreams associated with Japan. Building on more than 150 years of cultural exchange between Austria and Japan, the exceptional year 2020 seemed perfect for this experiment.
A selection of 100+ works submitted to #JapanRevisited202x are featured on this website in a curated audio-visual journey and online gallery from September to November 2020.
